When people step out onto mission with Jesus, there will always be stories to tell and insights to share. Just as those who first walked with Jesus passed on their experiences to others, we believe that anything we gain on our journey with Christ belongs to everyone. So eat up and drink deep, but whatever you recieve here must be shared with others. We promise it will grow and deepen in the sharing.

This is the first post in a series called Following Jesus.

500 pound gorillaThere is a 500-pound gorilla in the room. Can you feel him? He lurks in the shadows of our churches. When we look in our rear view mirrors on the way to work, he stares back. We can hear him give the occasional bored grunt from the next cubicle over at work. From sidewalks and grocery lines he glares accusingly, menacingly. He stubbornly takes up half the coach at home. You can almost feel his hot breath on your shoulder as you read this.

I was invited to speak at a conference of campus ministers a few days ago (see NCMS website). God had impressed upon me this deep sense that I should be there to listen. So I talked to the leaders...

We do sidewalk VBS on Fridays in the projects near us each week. It consists of a short lesson, snacks, games, and just loving the kids there. We range from 15-40 kids, ages 2-15. This week we came prepared for a crowd and got 3 kids instead. "Where's everyone at?" we asked. "There was a fight, a big fight, with violence. Everyone went inside." We questioned more to find out it was a fight between an adult and a teen, there was guns, there was yelling, no cops got involved, and these kids found it safe to come back out, since the fight had dispersed. Knowing why there was only 3 kids changed our perspective. We were glad there was only 3, and for safety's sake we wished those 3 had still been inside.
This is their world. We can gasp and say that it is foolish we go to the projects, or we could stereotype all the people who live in the projects to explain the reasons for the violence, but as I sat with this 5,8,and 10 year old, I realized they were the same loveable...

Jesus and His Gospel
Written by Jared

During some of the teaching opportunities with already-christians lately, I've asked a question. What was the Gospel that Jesus taught? The most common answer tends to be "love." However, while that was indeed a major component and motivator of His Gospel, I find myself challenging, if not correcting, this assumption much to the surprise of the group. Groups of people have repeatedly not known the answer to the question: What was the Gospel that Jesus taught?

The Gospels tells...

On Being New Humans

I'm sitting on our sofa with my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She's snuggled up next to me and asks, What do you think? I responded, Oh I'm thinking about God. People have a lot of problems and I'm trying to understand how to explain the Kingdom of God to them.

Then I ask my daughter, Princess, what do you think?

She answers, I think I want a popsicle.
