Jesus and his gospel
Every religion understands: humanity cannot know God unless he enters our world. That's why we build temples, carve idols, and invent rituals. We must have a way to see and touch the divine or else he remains only a mystery. God, knowing this, sent himself to us in a most unusual way so we could know him. He became human -- God-in-the-flesh. And we call him Jesus. This is the pivot upon which the Christian world turns: the life and message of Jesus of Nazareth.

Smoke StackThis is the third part of the “Following Jesus” series.

Up to this point, I’ve discussed the problem of following Jesus and our various possible responses in “The 500-Pound Gorilla“. In “The Starting Point“, I also pointed out a fundamental shift from Ecclesiology >> Missiology >> Christology to Christology >> Missiology >> Ecclesiology that undergirds all I am going to say about following Jesus. Now it’s time to get into some of the fundamental changes required to...

Hugo at the UNYesterday my friend Hugo (pictured left filling in for the UN ambassador from Kuwait) invited my to hear Sunday Adelaja speak at The Christian Cultural Society at UN Headquarters (I was sitting in the representative’s seat for Kyrgyzstan - see pic). This article is the second in a multi-part series called “Following Jesus”.

let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…. [HEB 21:1 NIV]

Starting LineWhen running races, perhaps the most important thing is showing up at the correct starting line. It seems to me, that despite the decline in Christianity’s influence and effectiveness in recent times, the amount of effort put into “doing” our religion is still pretty high. It’s not that we’ve quit doing things, even many things we might categorize more-or-less under the title “following Jesus”. But the results (or lack thereof)...

This is the first post in a series called Following Jesus.

500 pound gorillaThere is a 500-pound gorilla in the room. Can you feel him? He lurks in the shadows of our churches. When we look in our rear view mirrors on the way to work, he stares back. We can hear him give the occasional bored grunt from the next cubicle over at work. From sidewalks and grocery lines he glares accusingly, menacingly. He stubbornly takes up half the coach at home. You can almost feel his hot breath on your shoulder as you read this.

I was invited to speak at a conference of campus ministers a few days ago (see NCMS website). God had impressed upon me this deep sense that I should be there to listen. So I talked to the leaders...

the gospel? PDF Print E-mail

During some of the teaching opportunities with already-christians lately, I've asked a question. What was the Gospel that Jesus taught? The most common answer tends to be "love." However, while that was indeed a major component and motivator of His Gospel, I find myself challenging, if not correcting, this assumption much to the surprise of the group. Groups of people have repeatedly not known the answer to the question: What was the Gospel that Jesus taught?

The Gospels tells...
